Another long night in the ER
Last night (Sunday) during our small group meeting we were in the kitchen cleaning up and all the kids were in the toy room playing when all of a sudden we heard crying. Berkeley came running out saying Oliver hit his head on the window and was bleeding. Sure enough, out he came with a huge gash in his forehead. Apparantly, they were jumping on the bed and he fell and hit his head on the window sill. We jumped in the car and made our way to the closest hospital. He was in a lot of pain and thankfully I had enough sense to have Tom grab the Children's Tylenol on our way out the door. In the car he keps saying "It hurts, Mom, it hurts" so I asked him if we should pray & ask Jesus to help him feel better. He nodded and said "uh-huh, pray." After we prayed I grabbed Tom's phone and he just happened to have a whole bunch of pictures on it from a trip out to a client's house to ride horses just before Christmas. That calmed him right down and he sat in the back seat flipping through all the fun pics of him and Berk riding. We got to the ER and only had to wait about 40 minutes before they saw us. We got there just in time...about 3 minutes after we registered the entire waiting room was full.
His Dr. was super nice...his name was Dr. Ball and he was awesome with Oliver. Whenever he would leave the room Oliver would say "Where Dr. Golf? Dr. Golf help me." They ended up super gluing it rather than giving him stitches which made it a lot easier on him and us. I think Oliver actually kind of enjoyed himself. He got all kinds of juice and crackers. He'd take a drink of juice and say "Mmmmm, tasty juice." Then, he'd take a bite of cracker and say "Mmmm, tasty." He enjoys food almost as much as his mother. On the way out of the ER we saw Dr. Ball at the front desk and Oliver said "Tank you, see you 'morrow Dr. Golf" and high-fived him out the door.
It was actually a rather quick ER trip for us. I think we left around 8:30 and got home around 11:45. He was in bed by midnight. I was up until about 5:00 am trying not to get sick from the horrible sight of my baby's head with a huge gash in it. Tom thought that if it would have been any bigger we would have been able to see his skull. It was pretty narly.
When he woke up this morning I asked him how his head felt and he said "it hurts" so we got him more medicine and he told Berkeley all about how "Dr. Golf helped him with his boo-boo." He has to take it easy for the next few days to make sure it doesn't open back up. It has been a challenging morning trying to make a 2-1/2 yr old lay low. I can't believe we made it 2-1/2 years with him before going to the ER. I'm getting better though...I don't think I swore once this time! It definitely gets easier the second time around! Not that it's enjoyable, it still makes me really angry when my kids get hurt like that and it's so hard to stay calm, but the not swearing thing was ground-breaking for me!
